A new Baby Memorial Garden has been created at London Road Cemetery in Thatcham, providing a dedicated, peaceful space for reflection and remembrance for those who have experienced the profound loss of a baby.

For many bereaved parents and families in Thatcham, there has long been no specific place to visit and honour their lost children. This new garden offers a meaningful sanctuary where they can find solace and comfort.

This special project was brought to life through the dedication and generosity of local parents, volunteers, and organisations. Key supporters include Greenham Trust, JB Groundcare, Peter Baker Grants, MJ Sly Memorials, Rivar Sand & Gravel, Thatcham Town Council, and Sands West Berkshire volunteers.

The centrepiece of the Memorial Garden is a pedestal on to which families can add a plaque in remembrance of their baby, The pedestal was generously funded by Hampshire Hospitals Charity Forget Me Not Fund. Applications for a plaque can be made through Thatcham Town Council.

Fundraising efforts were heartfelt and wide-ranging: Thatcham Pharmacy held a charity day, local parents Mel and Dave Pottinger completed the Reading Half Marathon, and Kennet School selected the project as their Year 10 fundraising initiative.

The vision for the Memorial Garden began in 2017 when West Berkshire Sands, a local support group for bereaved parents, approached Thatcham Town Council to seek permission for its creation. Sadly, the group disbanded soon after, and the project was paused.

In 2021, Thatcham Town Council stepped in to revive the initiative, determined to honour the wishes of local families and supporters. Under the dedicated leadership of Deputy Town Clerk Laura Carlin, the council guided the project through to completion.

A pivotal moment came in December 2023, when the central Sands Group transferred the funds originally raised, giving the project fresh momentum. By the end of 2024, Thatcham Town Council had committed the remaining funds needed to bring the garden to life.

Now, after years of community effort and collaboration, the Baby Memorial Garden stands as a lasting tribute and a source of comfort for families navigating the heartbreak of loss.
