Berkshire Afrofest successfully brought together the diverse communities of Berkshire on The Moors in Thatcham on Saturday 10th August 2024. Conceived by Avila, an African fusion restaurant and catering business based in Reading, Afrofest was designed to give back to the local community. The event was hosted in collaboration with Community United and Thatcham Town Council.
In an extraordinary display of generosity, over 1200 free tickets were distributed to encourage attendance from all corners of the community. The festival’s highlight was a free BBQ donated by Avila, offering delicious Afrofusion food to all attendees accompanied by an Afrobeats DJ.
The egg and spoon race, sack race, and tug of war drew enthusiastic participation, with over 100 people competing in these friendly but highly competitive games. The event was further enriched by the presence of notable figures, including MP Lee Dillon, Mayor of Thatcham Suzanne Adamantos, Thames Valley Police, and the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, all of whom joined in the festivities to show their support for the community.
One attendee expressed his appreciation for the event, stating, “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a friendly and family-oriented event which was very clear had one purpose and that was giving back and bringing the community together as one.”
Afrofest stands as a testament to the power of community, cultural pride, and generosity by bringing people together for a day of fun, food, and friendship.
